Winter Weather Alert

In the event of possible snowy or icy weather, please listen to your local radio stations regarding delayed openings or school cancellations before leaving your house or sending your child off to catch the school bus. The highway department and the police department collaborate with the school district in making the decision for a delayed opening or cancellation, since what might appear as wet or light snow-covered roads might actually be sheets of ice, making driving treacherous. Children from approximately 18 school districts attend our school and we had to pick one district to follow. Since the majority of our children are enrolled in our Yorktown locations we chose the Yorktown school district.

The following radio stations are among those that will announce information on delayed openings and school cancellations:

  • WLAD - 800AM
  • WCBS - 880AM
  • WINE - 940AM
  • WFAS - 1230AM
  • WBNR - 1260AM
  • WLNA - 1420AM
  • WPUT - 1510AM
  • WRKI - 95.1FM
  • WDAQ - 98.3FM
  • WHUD - 100.7FM
  • WFAS - 103.9FM
  • WSPK - 104.7FM
  • WAXB - 105.5FM
  • WFAS - 106.3FM

If you are pushed for time and can’t wait for the radio announcement, calling the school office (914-962-9466) will also give you the up-to-date information you need when there is a delayed opening or cancellation. Other parents may also be calling that number, so you may often get a busy signal.

If you have internet access the following web sites post school delays and cancellations:

as well as our own blog at www.ourmontessorischool.blogspot.com

If you would like to get an e-mail alert about emergency school closings, send a message to oms9@bestweb.net from the email address you want the alert to go to with “Permission to e-mail” in the subject box.

To help those parents who must go to work and MUST bring their children to school in spite of dangerous road conditions, we have an emergency “Snow Angel” service. The “Snow Angel” service provides a program similar to our “Extended Day” service for those children whose parents bring them to school. It is intended as an emergency solution only and will not be a regular class program. There are two “Snow Angel” sites, one in Carmel and one in Yorktown, at the Methodist Church.

Road conditions may make it impossible for our snow angels to get to school exactly on time. If you need to use the extended day service (before 9:00 a.m.) on snow days, please be sure to call the school first to make sure that the snow angel has arrived (914-962-9470) for Yorktown, 845-225-8969 for Carmel). Please note that on snow days it will be impossible to keep parking lots and walkways clear of snow and ice at all times. If you bring your child, please use extreme caution.

“PARENTS' NIGHT OUT”

First Saturday of Every Month
6p.m. - 11 p.m.

At our building at 4 Glenna Drive, Carmel

for ALL OMS families,

whether in our Yorktown or Carmel locations

Our monthly PARENTS' NIGHT OUT is on the first Saturday of each month. Recently, some of the parents who use this service requested that we consider changing the timing from the current 7 p.m.-12 midnight to 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. It seems this new timing is more convenient for attending local theaters. Therefore, as of December 6 the Parents’ Night Out hours will be 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Don't you deserve a special night out? Don't you long to spend a special evening with your spouse, without Junior spilling the milk or complaining because you won't let him build a fort out of the water glasses? This is a fantastic opportunity to leave your children in the safekeeping of OMS teachers and enjoy a pleasant evening out in the area.

Dress code for the children is pajamas and activities include games, snacks, arts & crafts, and, later, settling in on cots for a video.

The best part of PARENTS' NIGHT OUT is the cost: just $6.00 per child per hour. This service is available only to parents of OMS children, but siblings are welcome.

Reservations are suggested so that you can be reached in the event of cancellation. For reservations, call the school office at 962-9466
